Advertising the advertisement

We have a new postcard sized advertisement printed so a local comic shop can bring them to MegaCon in Orlando. Which means we have lots and lots of extras. They look very much like this on one side:

While the other side looks an awful lot like this:

So here we have about a thousand cards handy, and though we'll try to get them in the hands of comic shops around the country (world really), we definitely have some we could send you, if you want one (or ten, or fifty if you will take forty to your local comic shop and sell them on giving these away free to their customers, and reading Tart themselves).

I just created a yahoo email account for Tart mail. So if you want to send any private feedback you can mail me at Tartacid@yahoo.com (right now it only goes to Kevin, but I'll probably forward it to Ludo so don't get too private if you know what I mean).

But here's why I'm saying this in this blog post. If you would like one of the adverts as a souvenir, just email us at that email address with your physical address and we'll send you one. I will send to Europe, so don't let that hold you back, but I can't guarantee anything arriving to anyone, as I'm sending it regular postage. If you want it endorsed in any way, make sure to include that in the email.

Come back tomorrow for some teases, posters and something special Ludo has worked up for Valentine's Day that I haven't even seen.

Happy Saturday everybody!

As you know Ludo and I are holding two contests for the people willing to give Tart a chance early on. I say Ludo and I, but he's really the one doing all the work. Doesn't matter, I'm still taking half the credit.

Anyway, we put every persons name in a hat that has "liked" Tart's Facebook page and I had my daughter pull one out.

It was an idea fraught with danger. If you know anything about three year olds (or at least MY three year old), then you know asking them to do anything out of the ordinary has - what's a nice word for this? - unpredictable results.

As I was making a video explaining how the contest would work (actually blogging this while the video uploads to Facebook), Vienna walked up in her yellow Belle dress, wearing a Tiara and holding a purse. She then says, "I wanted to give you this. I was scared before, but I'm not scared now." Which is either a quote from "Beauty and the Beast" or evidence that I'm an awful father.

I'm crossing my fingers for "Beauty and the Beast."

I then explained to her what she was going to do, and she quickly grabbed a name, said, "I can't do it (she'd totally already done it)," cried and ran away.

All and all, as much of a success as I could have hoped for.

There's still six more minutes of uploading time on the first video, so I'm wondering if I should just put the winner here right now, or wait until it's announced on Facebook?

Hmmmm? Maybe I'll take care of a little bidness first and see how close we are then.

If you're reading this you know that issue 1 has completed and Tart is somewhere, very, very cold. That's all you're getting from me about what's happening in the comic, so don't ask, but I do want to get you some scheduling information.

This next Tuesday will not be the first few pages of issue 2. Instead, Ludo will be posting some teases for the upcoming issues, promo art and a few other things he finds interesting. This break is from the story is built in to give Ludo a breather as he finishes the final art on issue 3 and to give you, our friends (I hope you become fans of the comic, but if you're here this early, you're most likely friends - or dang it you will be if you stick with us, because we will not be able to go forward with issues 4 plus without strong support from the core group we build by publishing issues 1 through 3 here) time to corral others who might be interested in reading the first issue.

Ok, I'm stalling for time here, but the video is uploaded, now I need to put up the one with Vienna pulling the name. I didn't capture the grab, as she did it quicker than I expected, but I think it's worth it to put up because she sort of freaks at the end.

Ooohhhh. Five minutes to go on the second video upload. And my wife just got home from the store so I think I'll just post the picture of the winning name.

The Patron Saint of Tart, Part 2

... so when last I was posted, I was about to introduce you better to Ana.

After Janet and I returned from London we had many memories, a couple souvenirs (Janet got two Sonny Crockett action figures - I told you Don Johnson was her first love) and zero, count them, zero pictures.

Travel trip for anyone visiting a country with an unfavorable exchange rate: PACK A CAMERA.

When we got to London we saw the disposable cameras in the shop for fifteen pounds. At a two-to-one exchange rate Janet and I just couldn't justify 30 bucks for 15 pictures. About two weeks after we returned though we got an email. You might have guessed it, from Ana. With a photo of Janet talking to Neil Gaiman as he signed our books.

{ My wife is the one in the picture who does not look like Neil Gaiman. I have no idea who the chap standing in the doorway is, but I can tell you he's hoping we'll finish soon so he can come in out of the cold.}

We stayed Pen Pals. She helped me track down Laurence, who agreed to illustrate a poem for me which we've since self-published. Not only that, but Ana translated it into French for us. She introduced me to the wonderful fantasy short story zine Ethereal Tales in which she'd had a poem and artwork published. And then the email came:

It was something like, "I have this friend who is an amazing artist. He's been working on these characters for a awhile and he's really got something. But he's stuck. You guys seem to have the same sensibility, I thought maybe you might work together well."

I told her I was too busy to do anything, but I'd be happy to read what he sent.

About two days later I received six pages of the the most beautiful artwork I'd ever seen. Now over the last two years Ludo's English has improved greatly, but what was awesome was at that point, it was pretty awful (Let me stop for a moment and say that Ludo's English, even at that time, is a thousand times better than my French. So yes, I know that I'm being unfair, but bear with me). And he'd hurried his translation in order to show me the story.

Because the translation was... off, I had this really strange fixation with it. The art was crisp, the action was kinetic and the dialogue was... insane. But like, Japanese game show insane. I loved it, but didn't know what I could do with it. Depressed that I had this in with an amazing artist, I decided I just wasn't capable of contributing.

So I went to sleep. At 4 AM that night I woke up. I had an image of a girl waking up in an alley. She didn't know where she was. She didn't even know when she was. But she knew there was a problem out there she needed to solve.

The nuts and bolts of the issue you're reading, and the series we're presenting grew organically through a lot of cross Atlantic emails between Ludo, Ana and I. Yes, Ana. She doesn't get a credit on our story, but if there is an editor of Tart, Ana is it. She's been part of this story from the beginning. Offering suggestions, brainstorming, giving support when needed, kicks in the ass when necessary, and reading on every script we've worked on.

Without Ana, there is no Tart. So if you enjoy what you're reading, give a toast to her, she is the person who brought Ludo and I together on this project. And I can't thank her enough.

The Patron Saint of Tart, Part 1

I worked late tonight, and can never get to sleep at a normal time when that happens. Working in a casino can be lots of fun, but coming down after eight hours slinging cards is not always the easiest thing possible. So instead of tossing and turning, I think I'll just introduce you all to Ana. Without whom, Tart would not exist.

And that's not hyperbole. It absolutely would not have ever come to my, or Ludo's minds to create it if Ana hadn't performed her special brand of alchemy.

I always love telling stories about Ana because I can start them with the line, "I met her on my honeymoon." Let me tell you, if you ever need to get a group of people's attention, just say that. It's like dangling honey in front of Pooh Bear, you've got yourself an attentive audience.

But it's true, I did meet Ana on my honeymoon. Of course, so did my wife, so it isn't as salacious as it sounds.

My wife Janet and I are not "Tropics People." God bless all of you who are, it just wouldn't have been our thing. Instead of basking in the sun of Acapulco, we chose to brave the early April mist of London instead. Between the two of us, our house is littered with albums by The Clash, novels by Douglas Adams, Monty Python memorabilia, The comics of Alan Moore, and most especially ALMOST EVERYTHING Neil Gaiman has ever written.

And it just so happened that the week we were going to be in London, Neil Gaiman was going to be there as well. When a signing at Forbidden Planet was arranged, I asked Janet if we could go.

So we planned our week as well as we could. We wanted to see a show on The West End (We saw two actually: "Spamalot" and "Guys and Dolls" starring Don Johnson - my wife's first true love). Walk Hyde Park. See the British Museum, etc. But all of these things had to be planned around the signing. Janet was game.

So the day of the signing we got there early (Do not wander up to a Neil Gaiman signing five minutes before it starts, or you'll be there until the next morning). It was cold and drizzly and dreary, and nobody was in line yet, so we crossed the street and got lunch. Through the window we saw one person come and sit down waiting for the signing. When two girls joined her, we decided it was time to brave the cold with the rest of the diehards.

When we got in line, everyone sort of introduced themselves. We talked about our favorite Gaiman stories, what we'd brought to have signed (I'd stuffed my suitcase with about 6 books, including Neil's first published book about Duran Duran - My favorite author, one of Janet's favorite bands - is that precious or what : )

Then the conversation turned to what people did, or wanted to do. Two of the girls in line were Ana, and Laurence. Ana was a costume designer and Laurence was (is) an astonishingly talented artist. Ana is an artist (and writer and poet) as well, but I think she is just one of those people who pushes those she believes in to create. And I believe this because of her work in bringing Tart into existence.

Which will be a story for another day. As this has already gotten very long and my Tylenol PM is starting to kick in. Good for my sleep, bad for blugggggggging. I mean blogging.

We're just a day away from the next update of Tart. I wrote a really predictable tease and promptly erased it. I could point out the plot points that will be followed up tomorrow and tease what might happen, but it just seems trite.

You're big boys and girls. I'll leave it up to you what's important. If you've got a minute, give it another read today to refresh yourself where Tart is on her voyage to find John Martin.

And please leave comments with questions, observations and suggestions. We probably won't answer any plot point or character background questions (where's the fun in giving up the mystery before it's even started), but would love to hear what you like, and where you think the story might be going.

Comments may just be saved and used if/when we ever go to print. And I think I'll steal a bit of marketing from the Tick and make sure that everyone printed in our comic has a chance to win something unique for their trouble (like possibly one of the three pieces of original art Ludo posted below - hint hint).

If you liked Buffy the Vampire Slayer or Sandman...

Well so did the guys who came up with Tart...

So we've got that going for us.

I've always wanted to say something like that. And now I can, and it's true. The world we've worked on creating would not have existed without the years we've each spent individually immersing ourselves in worlds devised by Gaiman, Whedon, Moore, etc.

If we do our job right, comparisons to Buffy will come. Not only do I not run from it, I embrace it. But Tart is not just an ancestor of Buffy, but of Claremont's Rogue and Kitty Pryde (and anyone who read Whedon's Astonishing X-Men knows just how much Joss likes him some Shadowcat). Of Aerin Firehair from Robin McKinley's "The Hero and the Crown" (if you've never read that do yourself a favor and buy a copy for yourself this holiday season). Of Tolkien's Eowen of Rohan and many, many others*.

Now for the bidness: Ludo is making some last changes/fixes to better tell our story through the online format (we added a couple pages to the first issue if you need to know) and we're emailing back and forth across the Atlantic to figure out the best schedule to release our little project.

As of right now we are set to self-publish the first three issues of Tart here. As I said just down the page - go ahead scroll down and see... are you back... no... Now... Okay, good, I missed you - they'll come out in weekly updates of 4 to 6 pages depending on what works best for the story. When we've put up an entire issue, we'll take a breather for a week or two and then start on the next issue.

Why stop at three issues? Well there's good news for that. Ludo will be concentrating on another project with a publisher in France, and we don't want to suck up too much of his time as he perfects that.

Well, for now, that's it...

And sorry Ana, I'd love to tell you where I paraphrased (stole) the line from in the last post, but that wouldn't be fair to the other kids in the class.

*I also liked Knight Rider a lot, but as of yet, there are no plans for a talking car (that Ludo has accepted).

Welcome to the Tart Webcomic! This is Kevin Joseph (KJ), the writer and Co-Creator of Tart. I'm proud to say with Artist and Co-Creator Ludovic Salle (Hell Strawberry), we'll eventually be rolling out our series here in this very space. It's all very fluid right now, so we'll better inform you of publishing schedules, etc. but our goal is to bring you an issue of "Tart" over about a month in 4 to 6 page weekly segments (We figure, if four page chunks worked for Alan Moore in Warrior Magazine, it just might work for us).

We'll start rolling out our story soon, in the meantime, make sure to check out Ludo's other webcomic "Hell Strawberry" at http://hellstrawberry.blogspot.com/ Hell Strawberry is all Ludo's. I'm trying to make a deal for a cut in the profits, but since she existed long before Ludo and I met, I think the best I can ask for is a free copy of the comic when he prints it (and I'll take it!). Hell Strawberry and Tart, two kick-ass heroines that may or may not run into to each other some day (of course they will, if it worked for Stan Lee, it just might work for us).

Hey this blogging thing is easy, wonder if it'll help us get our work in front of as many eyes as possible (It worked for Neil Gaiman, yada yada yada).
